WHAT IS THE ARTS & SCIENCE STAFF NETWORK?
The Arts and Science Staff Network serves as a channel of communication among members of the non-academic staff in the College of Arts and Science, as an advisory group to the Dean of the college and the Dean's staff and as a liaison to other similar groups outside the college. The network has four goals: to develop non-academic staff a human resource; to enhance cooperation and the exchange of information among administrators, faculty, staff and students; to foster continued education and professional development; and to serve as a representative body making known the interests of the staff. In attempting to achieve its goals, the network will focus on general policies that affect staff, recognition of staff achievements, training and development opportunities for staff and other issues identified by the staff, by network members or by the Dean.
The network will be composed of 12 members of the A&S staff drawn from 3 peer groups: 3 Technical/Paraprofessional; 5 Secretarial/Clerical; and 4 Administrative/Professional. If members are not available from a sector or sectors, staff from the remaining peer group(s) will be selected to serve, even if the substitutions alter the peer-group ratio. A member of the dean's administrative staff, appointed by the dean, will attend meetings in an advisory capacity.
Members will serve a two-year term beginning July 1st in the year they are elected. Network members must be employed at least .75 FTE by the College of Arts & Science. Two representatives may be drawn from the same department but they must represent different peer groups. Members may be re-elected to the network but not for consecutive terms. This restriction does not apply to members appointed to replace other members.
STAFF ENRICHMENT AWARD:
The A&S Staff Enrichment Award was created in the early 1990s by the ASSN to help fund development activities for nonacademic staff. The award is intended to support participation in short courses, workshops, conferences and similar short-term experiences.
Up to 4 awards (maximum of $150 each) may be given in a fiscal year. The committee reviews proposals and selects the recipients who are notified in writing with instructions to submit their expenses and a report within 30 days of completion of the activity. The A&S Fiscal Office submits the expenses for reimbursement according to university regulations. At present, no deadlines have been established.
STAFF HELPING STAFF:
The A&S Staff Helping Staff Campaign began in 1996-97 as a special way for staff to participate in the Mizzou Enrichment Fund Campaign. Personal donations are solicited from faculty and staff of the college and earmarked to go toward education expenses or toward supplies and services for staff. The A&S Development Office notifies the network when contributions are made so that we have a record of the amount of funding available to support tuition and the amount donated to cover costs of services and supplies.
STAFF APPRECIATION AWARD:
The A&S Staff Appreciation Award was created in 1996 by the ASSN, in cooperation with the Dean's Office, to recognize outstanding staff for fine performances and attitudes.
The award comes with a plaque, a gift of $200, tickets to a University Theatre production and several gift certificates. In addition, the employee's picture appears in Mizzou Weekly. Nomination forms are sent from the Dean's Office in early December with a mid-January deadline. A faculty, comprised of emeritus professors, committee reviews entries in late January giving the network time to send a congratulatory letter to the recipient. The Awards Committee makes arrangements with the A&S Fiscal Office for the actual awards. The staff member receives the plaque during the ASSN Luncheon in the spring.
VARIOUS COMMITTEES WITHIN THE NETWORK:
CONNECTIONS:
This committee is charged with welcoming new staff to the College of Arts & Science with a welcome packet and letter. Over the years different things have been done to welcome new staff from e-mail greeting cards to packets of wonderful little gifts. Connections also takes care of recognizing promotion and service awards and it handles the elections of network members.
COMMUNICATIONS:
This committee takes care of the web site, the email list serve and also the newsletter that is done at least twice a year (if not more).
EVENTS:
The events committee finds fundraisers that the college can participate in that will benefit the community. Past fundraisers have included food drives for the Central Missouri Food Bank and school supply drives for Hallsville and Fulton public schools. Cookbooks were published twice to help out both the Ronald McDonald House and the Central Missouri Food Bank. First Aid drives have also been done. The committee is also in charge of any ASSN-sponsored events for the A&S Week in February, which usually includes a popular bowling tournament for faculty, staff and students of our various departments. This committee has also sold T-shirts.
BROWN BAG LUNCHES:
Over the years the ASSN has held various kinds of lunches. There have been potluck lunches where the object was to get everyone together to visit, we have had craft lunches where we learned how to make something, and we have had speakers come to inform us of new ideas that could help us in the work place. The committee also tries to have a holiday luncheon in December and in the spring we have the banquet. One year we had a retreat off campus with seminars offered by various on-campus divisions (i.e., accounting, human resources). All are a lot of fun and a chance for us to get together and network while we pick up some helpful hints for increasing our professionalism.
AWARDS:
This committee is responsible for trying to get people involved with the Staff Helping Staff campaign. This component of the committees responsibility has been let go and something that needs to be looked at for the future.
This committee also receives proposals from staff applying for Enrichment awards to help them attend a job related conference or to attend a class to improve their job skills.
Once a year the committee sends out an announcement to faculty and staff asking them to nominate a staff member that has shown outstanding service to the department and the college. This is awarded at the Spring Banquet. With this award the recipient gets a plaque, cash award and summer tickets to the Rhynsburger Theater.
